Iron Single-edged Sword of the Hun Period from Central Kazakhstan: Results of Metallographic Analysis

In Kazakhstan, burials of the Hunnic era have been studied in tiny quantities. The article presents scientific findings on an iron sword discovered in the Karaganda region. The weapon was found in the burial of a young woman, buried in the mound of an early Saka period barrow. Iron arrowheads of the Hunnic era were also found. The date of the sword is determined within the 4^th —5^th centuries BC. A single-edged sword with a long and narrow blade, a pin-shaped pommel, and a diamond-shaped guard is typologically close to broadswords. Research has shown that the weapon was forged from a bloom. The carbon content is between 0.008 and ~0.2 mas%. Low hardness and relatively high plasticity provided this weapon with quite optimal qualities under the conditions of that time. © Stratum plus.
