The composition and the sorption properties of vermiculite from Mugodzhary field (Kazakhstan) were studied. The sorption properties of modified vermiculite were investigated under mechano-chemical activation in the presence of acidic sodium phosphate, Na2HPO4· 12H2O. Optimization of the mechano-chemical activation of vermiculite in the presence of Na2HPO4-12H2O was carried out depending on the duration of mechano-chemical activation and the ratio of the mass of the substance to the mass of the balls. It was revealed that the sorption capacity of the vermiculite samples does not change sequentially, which indicates the aggregation of the mixture particles. The highest degree of sorption was shown by the sample treated for 30 min. The results of the experiments showed that the degree of sorption of the activated vermiculite with respect to Mn2+ is higher than that of Ni2+, Cu2+. The results of sorption indicate an improvement in the properties of the sorption capacity during the formation of an amorphous phase when processing vermiculite with Na2HPO4 · 12H2O. Using the methods of atomic absorption analysis, XRD, IR, the effect of additives on the degree of sorption was established: with Na2HPO4 · 12H2O, it grows in the following sequence Mn2+ > Ni2+ > Cu2+ (Mn = 99.8 %, Ni = 99.3 %, Cu = 99.0 %). As a result of the research a new effective sorbent was obtained from natural vermiculite by the mechanical activation in the presence of sodium hydrogen phosphate, Na2HPO4l2H2O.
