The article analyzes the works of contemporaries dedicated to the biography and scientific heritage of the archaeologist Karl M. Baipakov (1940–2018). The content of these publications allows us to confidently regard him as one of the scholar-encyclopaedists and to place him alongside the leading representatives of the academic community who worked within the system of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan and higher education. Baipakov’s scholarly interests encompassed a wide range of issues related to the ancient and medieval archaeology of Kazakhstan; particular attention was devoted to his long-term, comprehensive studies of urban culture in Southern Kazakhstan and Jetisu, which underscores the need for their historiographical analysis. Through scholarly reconstruction, the article focuses on analyzing the works of researchers addressing various stages of Baipakov’s life and academic activity, as well as on systematizing his biography based on the accounts of his contemporaries. For the first time, archival materials reflecting the scholar’s professional activity are introduced as sources. The body of analyzed sources includes the archaeologist’s scientific publications, analytical reviews of his works, as well as reminiscences of colleagues and students. It is noted that despite Karl M. Baipakov’s significant contribution to the development of Kazakhstani archaeology, the number of specialized studies devoted to his scientific legacy remains limited. The article highlights the fundamental importance of his four-volume work on the history of urbanization in Kazakhstan in antiquity and the Middle Ages, based on materials of the South Kazakhstan Complex Archaeological Expedition, and reveals his role in shaping and advancing research on medieval urbanization. The study concludes that Karl M. Baipakov was one of the pioneers in the study of archaeological architecture and the founder of the archaeological direction in urbanization research in Kazakhstan.
