The research focuses on the participation of the Jadid movement in the political transformation of Central Asia during the revolutionary events of 1917–1918, culminating in the establishment of Turkestan Autonomy. The study explores the evolution of the Jadid movement from educational reforms to socio-political activism, emphasizing its role in the democratization and modernization of the region. The Jadids, as proponents of Islamic modernism, advocated for secular governance, universal education, and democratic rights. Their efforts led to the proclamation of Turkestan Autonomy in November 1917, a significant milestone as the first secular democratic republic in Central Asia. The autonomy, however, faced strong opposition from conservative Islamic groups (Kadimists) and external forces, notably the Bolsheviks. The study concludes that despite its brief existence and eventual suppression in February 1918, Turkestan Autonomy was a pivotal experiment in state-building in Central Asia. It laid the groundwork for modern concepts of governance and national self-determination in the region. The results highlight the Jadid movements legacy in shaping political thought and democratic ideals in Central Asia, offering valuable insights into the historical context of state formation in the early twentieth century.
