Hydraulic structures have been actively used in human society for thousands of years. While they are very useful as facilities for collecting drinking water and irrigating agricultural land, they are at the same time potentially dangerous objects. They are destroyed under the influence of various natural and anthropogenic factors and cause significant damage. Therefore, the issue of early assessment of their condition has always been topical. In recent decades, thanks to the appearance of modern high-tech equipment, the non-invasive geophysical methods for monitoring the condition of earth dams and the determination of water-saturated zones in the dam body have become more and more widespread. The article presents the results of using the electrical resistivity survey method for inspection of the earthen dam near the village of Turar in Almaty region of Kazakhstan. The geophysical work has been carried out and the water-saturated zones have been identified in the dam body. These zones may be the pathways for seepage of water from the reservoir and under certain conditions may cause further destabilization of the hydraulic structure. The field data have been processed by the specialized software and interpreted. The results of the interpretation made possible explain the causes of weakened zones in the earth body of dam. The studies have shown the high efficiency of the electrical resistivity tomography method in identifying zones of increased water saturation in the dam body. Obtaining primary information about the weakened zones in the earth dam body using this method will allow to organization in advance of the qualitative monitoring of changes in the condition of hydraulic structures. This will accordingly make it possible to carry out the necessary measures for the further safe operation of dams. Copyright © 2025 Praise Worthy Prize S.r.l.-All rights reserved.
