The role of rail transport in modern life cannot be underestimated: it ranks second in the world in terms of traffic volume and freight turnover. The total length of the tracks is 1.4 million km. Apart from the impressive length of the tracks, the low cost and, in fact, the lack of seasonal factor, the main advantage of this mode of transport is its environmental friendliness. Nowadays, at a time when global warming is being actively combatted, this fact makes it necessary to take a fresh look at the ‘old rails’ and determine the vectors of the railway’s further development. There-fore, the leadership of many countries is now acting within the context of ‘maintain and increase’ to meet the challenges of the timely and high-quality repair of tracks and rolling stock, their replacement and modernization, the reorganization and optimization of the entire railway transport operation. Scientific studies are being carried out to examine the impact of various external factors on the operation of mechanisms, units and individual parts of locomotives and cars to exclude or min-imize emergency situations, force majeure circumstances during transport of pas-sengers or freight. Special attention is paid to the components, which are important structural elements that experience maximum of stresses during their operation. This includes the tyres on locomotive wheelsets. Without them, rail travel would not be possible. Tyres are the essential link between the train wheels and the rails: their unique construction prevents the wheelsets from ‘skidding’ on the curves of the track (taper on the outer sides) and ‘derailing’ (flanges on the inner sides). The purpose of study: to find out an optimal universal method for determining the wear of locomotive wheelset tyres. The study represents research methods: physical and mathematical modelling, tribo-spectral identification, mathematical planning of experiments, evaluation of thermo-mechanical loading, etc. The represented material has a rather high application value. Information analysis and research methods will enable the implementation of new technologies, the improvement of equipment for the repair, modification of wheelset tyres, and the continuation of scientific studies in this field.
