Nutritional habits and diet play a significant role in the modulation of chronic systemic inflammation. Dietary habits are multidimensional quantities with strong intrinsic correlations. The complexity of assessing the influence of factors can be simplified with dietary indices, which quantify dietary differences in a single parameter and can be used as a tool for controlling diet in clinical trials. This review addresses different dietary indices and meal frequency questionnaires in studies assessing the effects of nutritional behavior on chronic low-grade inflammation.
