This article deals with the origin of possessive suffixes in Kazakh and Turkish languages. Turkic languages are known for their rich system of affixes used to express various grammatical meanings, including possession. In Turkic languages, the possessive suffix expresses the person and number of the possessive subject. Apart from the meanings of possession and belonging, possessive suffixes specific to Turkic languages can also express a number of other relations, depending on the unifying semantic groups of nouns. The aim of the article is to analyze the origin, evolution and current status of Kazakh and Turkish possessive suffixes. In order to achieve the aim of the study, the diachronic approach, comparative-historical, comparative and context-typological methods, as well as the methods of interpretation and generalization were used.
