There is a significant number of historical and cultural heritage monuments within the administrative boundaries of Almaty, including archaeological sites. In the context of intensive urban development, all of these sites require effective protection mechanisms. Insufficient attention to this issue poses a threat to their destruction and loss. An example of this is the Taugul-3 burial ground, which, due to bureaucratic procedures, was left without state protection and the associated preservation measures. The archaeological investigation of kurgan No. 3 yielded a small but very vivid and informative collection. It includes a set of ceramic vessels of various sizes and functional purposes, as well as items indicating the high status of the buried individual. These are a talc bowl and gold appliqués made in the animal style. The burial mound dates to the 5th-3rd centuries BC, and its materials demonstrate cultural connections across a wide geographical range, including the Altai, Eastern, and Southern Kazakhstan. The investigated kurgan is one of many burial structures that once existed within the city of Almaty. Most of them have been lost. The materials from the excavation of this ordinary kurgan, as described in this article, provide insight into the scale of the lost heritage, as well as what can still be preserved.
