Water security, public opinion and decision makers: Study of the District of Aral (Kazakhstan)

The drying up of the Aral Sea is a problem that has attracted the attention of many researchers. However, the opinions of the people who live there have rarely been taken into account. This article presents the results of fieldwork on water quality conducted in the Aral district (Kyzylorda region, Kazakhstan) between 31 August and 10 September 2020. These opinions are contrasted with the speeches of politicians, how they see the situation and what solutions they offer, including the creation of international organisations. Throughout the article, the different theoretical approaches from which the circumstances surrounding the problem of water insecurity in the studied district can be considered are presented.
