Modern geochemical laboratory methods have been used to study oil samples from subsalt deposits in the south-east of the Caspian Basin in order to determine the initial type of organic matter of oil-bearing rocks, the degree of its catagenetic transformation, and the facies genetic type of oil. It is concluded that the sedimentation of oil-bearing rocks in subsalt deposits in the southeastern part of the Caspian basin occurred in coastal and marine conditions. The main source organic matter was mainly marine/lake organisms and bacteria with a small contribution of shallow-water marine organisms (plankton, algae). Sedimentation of the S took place in a low-oxygen environment, the level of the catagenetic level was average. These studies are necessary to determine the prospects of oil and gas potential in the south-east of the Caspian basin.
