The term decolonization has become more prevalent in Kazakhstani public discourse, in stark contrast to Russia. The research seeks to examine the evolution and distinctive features of decolonization discourse in Kazakhstan and Russia. The research material was gathered from contemporary media sources. The study employed critical discourse analysis, a method that highlights the active nature of understanding, viewing language use as reflective of social practice, and emphasizing its reciprocal relationship with surrounding contexts, institutions, and social frameworks. The results indicate that historical content, the functions of the pluricentric Russian language, the transition to the Latin alphabet, and the renaming of toponyms and ergonyms as well as the change of anthroponyms are contentious points in the discourse of both Russia and Kazakhstan. Each discourse utilizes distinct formulations to describe the history of colonization and acts of decolonization, assigning different meanings to the same concepts. Russian develops unique linguistic varieties in Kazakhstan.
